Although Saab does not advertise this, you can benefit from an ECU reprogramming that improves engine performance by reducing the advance. I had the ECU changed in our 01 LPT for the Aero ECU awhile back, which helped a lot, but the new engine program was not available then. What a difference it has made ! I think I must be experiencing close to what the new Arc delivers in power. IAC, this reprogramming is available for people who find their 9-5 4 L sluggish, whether it be Aero or not. According to a dependable Saab source, cars in North America are programmed differently than those in Europe to counter pinking, because of the poor quality gasoline we are fed. So far I have not heard any pinking but the real test will come next summer. Of course I use premium gas since I changed ECU and that helps to reduce pinking, which according to him, can be occurring even if you don't actually hear it. There is a function on Tech II to check this.
There is another interesting update available for those who have troubles with brutal downshifting on 02 5-speed automatics. According to him, it works wonders, as long as the ECU is also reprogrammed.
Hope this can help fellow 9-5 owners. It would be a shame for people to be disastified with their car when there is actually a cure for it and nobody told them. The moral of this story, tell your dealer when you think something is not right with your car, Hopefully, he will be as competent as mine.
