Another Oil Question (Sorry)

I know you guys have been over this before, and I searched the messages but that only made me more confused.
I finally just asked my Saab dealer what he recommends.
I have a 2000 9-5 SE that I bought with 28k. It now has 36k.
He said I should NOT use synthetic on a 2000 9-5SE, only semi-synthetic. He also said I waited too long, that the oil change should be every 5k (with the semi-synthetic). The cost is $40, which seems fair. I used to bring my old Maxima to Jiffy Lube (which I will never do with my SAAB) and it would run almost $30.
I don't know if I waited too long between oil changes, because I don't know what kind of oil the original dealer put in when I bought the car (It was CPO and they said they changed the oil the day I picked it up. At that point I knew nothing about the different types of oil).
Does what the dealer said make sense? I have been trying to find out the benefits of regular v. synthetic (and now semi-synthetic) by searching prior posts, but there is an overwhelming amount of material out there and the more I look at it, the more confused I get.
As always, thanks in advance for any advice.
