When you talk about premium vs regular fuel you are not really talking about a more "powerful" formulation. You are talking about a fuel with more anti knock or smoother burning formulation. As you increase the compression ratio of the cylinder you must increase the smoothness with which the fuel-air mixture is ingnited. I really can not speak to the function of the ECU but I suspect what happens is when excessive knock is detected by the computer system certain varibles are adjusted to detune the engine performance. You are therefore now running in a less efficient, less powerful mode. In short, I don't think there is any tangible advantage to running a lower octane fuel. Just like there is no real advantage to running a higher (than required) octane.
