We noticed the same thing when we bought our '01 9-5lpt wagon about three months ago. Compared with our '99 sedan, it's quite a different ride. I've been told that this is common in the wagons because they have stiffer suspension. It came with a factory hitch too, so this makes even more sense. If the shocks were gone, the ride would be mushy as well. As mentioned, bounce the back end to be sure. We'll have our mechanic check them anyway next oil change but in the meantime he suggested putting 500lbs in the back to see if that helps. He also mentioned to use sand bags instead of cement blocks just in case of an accident...things that make you go hmmmm.
