CDR playback problem

My 2001 9-5 had been playing my DIY CDRs just fine. Then it started to skip, lock, refuse to eject and all kinds of other annoying intermittant quirks. Then it got out of control. It only behaved poorly with one or two commercial CDs.
Not all my DIYs have problems, just a few. All are burned from the same Mac and CDRW drive using iTunes. All the same TDK or Imation media, from the same 2 batches.
In any case, a new radio is coming (in warrantee) this week. And they all play fine on any other CD player.
I wonder if anyone else has experienced this and has found that burning realtime or slower or standing on your ear or whatever has helped.
I know that Saab recommends that you don't use DIYs, but modern CD lasers should read anything, I have a much older Sony clock radio that wasn't spec'ed for CDRs and it does fine, as does my wifes in dash slot-load in her '99 Silverado.
One other caveat, I have put paper stick on labels on all my discs. I'm wondering if the slot load mechanism just isn't a fan of labels. On slot load computers, many manufacturers warn against using labeld CDs in their slot-loaders. Even though my wifes rig handles them fine.
