I had my front brake pads and rotors changed after only 37k based on the recommendation of my dealer. I went to a non-dealer to perform this job as they were about $250 cheaper. I also had the tires rotated.

Immediately after the servicing I noticed that my fuel consumption was dramatically higher. In the city I got about 10-12mpg -- it was 18-19mpg in the past. On the highway I got about 20mpg -- it was ~30mpg previously. Over about 150 miles of driving my fuel consumption steadly rose and has now stabilized at around 15 mpg in the city and about 26mpg on the highway. Still worse than before the servicing.

I took the car back to the repair shop and was told that the brakes were not sticking (I would have seen a lot of brake dust on the rim). They suggested that the oxygen sensor might have gone out of calibration, or that the car computer is "re-learning" the correct fuel/air ratio after somehow being reset. I feel the car running a bit less smoothly and a bit more sluggishly, but that could just be my mind responding to the lower fuel consumption number on my dashboard.

Anyone have any ideas on what could be wrong? Suggestions on things I could try to debug this would be useful. I'd like to think this had nothing to do with the servicing my mechanic performed and that this is just coincidental timing.
