So the wife's 01 SE wagon is squealing like a piggy even when not on the brakes and it sounds as if it is coming from the rear passenger side. I'm assuming that it is a stuck caliper or bearing.

We take it in to Kachina Saab, Scottsdale and are unpleasantly surprised to hear from the service adviser that it is in fact the front passenger side rotor and pad that has gone below the wear sensor and it will be $670 thankyouverymuchsir to replace both fronts. After numerous searches on Saabnet I determine that although it is perhaps a little premature, it is not unreasonable in view of my wife's primarily city driving. Even the wife is placated after hearing her bosses recent $600 brake bill for a Sequoia at 16k.

I'm annoyed that I'm going to have to source parts and shadetree mechanic to take care of it (there's no way I'm paying $670) and also at the service adviser who wants to charge me a $66 diagnostic fee but after reading a post on here decide to give Saab USA a call and see what they can do for me.

The conversation went like this: I stated that I thought 24k was low for such wear and the lady said "you realize that pads are a wear item" me: "yes but the rotors should last longer than that", lady: "ok - well we may be able to offer you some relief towards the cost of the rotors". She called Kachina and after several voice mails was back to me with the offer to pick up labor and parts for the rotors.

Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised.

Total bill: $110

Thank you Saab USA and Saabnet :-D
