I just made a deal with a Saab dealer on a 1999 9.5 SE, but haven't completed it after my mechanic inspected the car today and turned thumbs down because he was very uncomfprtable with body issues. He's an excellent, trusted mechanic, but has little experience with the 9.5, so I hope I can get more advice here about what we saw. The car has about 50k on it, handles and runs great (even at 90mph) looks great inside and out. I really like it and the price is definitely right. But - The car seems to have been re-painted (very pro job - not obvious). No red flags from Carfax, but some curious things. For instance, very few miles were added to the odometer in the last 12 months. The mechanic thinks it was wacked in the past, but there aren't any signs of major reconstruction (welding, etc.)just the paint. The other issue is the mechanics found water dripping from plugs in the floor pan. The plugs were opened and at least a quart of water came out. Under the left rear mat, the carpet felt damp. Mechanic says water leak in body could be a consequence of the wacking, or in any case, leaks can be very difficult problems. I get his point, but I'm wondering about another possiblity - Could the water have come from the moon roof if it was craked open during a torrential rain and wind 2 nights ago? (I'm not 100% certain I got it closed properly a couple days before that.) Anyway, I'm thinking the wacking / paint thing is real but maybe not too serious, especially if the water has another explanation. I dig the car, but obviously have major reservations about proceeding with the deal. One last point, the car was listed as SAAB Certified, efectively giving about 14 months bumper to bumper, but I negotiated a price that would not include the certification. I'm considering 2 options 1)renegotiating but including the warranty, 2) dropping it and looking elsewhere. Any explanations or related experiences with the water issue would be greatly appreciated.
