Those tires are probably spec'd for 6-7.5" rims, with a nominal 6.5" reference spec.
I don't think that you would find the tires transformed by a wider rim. You cannot turn a touring tire into a high performance tire by spreading it out.
I get new rims and 17" tires, and go with the S-03's. Go to tirerack and looks up the S-03's and then go to the comparisions of other tires and you will find that you have a choise of 3 tires in this catagory. The Michelins are good, but they don't stack up when you look at the costs.
With long hard winters, perhaps you would do well with 15: steelies with wheel covers and not soak any alloys in the salt. So if your tires are low miles, you could sell them with the stock rims, get steelies with snows and order new rims and tires in the Spring from TR. That gives you the winder to sell the stock gear.
Alternatively, you could wear out the stock tires first, but then you would still have to sell the rims and you can't wait for snows, you need them in a few weeks.
If you put snows on the 16" alloys now, then you will want to sell the tires and get new rims and tires.
So lots of options, but not getting snow tires does not seem like an option where you are. Look at the classifies and see if there are any 17" rims or take-offs.
