my cupholder broke exactly the same way

You can take it out without even removing a dash, just take out the SID, the stereo and the ACC and use a screwdriver with a flexible extention. There are two screws -- one at the top of the cupholder, and another at the bottom. You cannot see them, and unscrewing them is not a very comfortable task, but it certainly is faster that removing the entire dash. Just don't drop the screws into the console.
Unfortunately, I unscrewed mine before calling the parts department. A new cupholder turned out to be $120 CAD, which I thought was a bit too much for a piece of plastic that I would never use (I don't eat or drink in my car), so I just put everything back together, and never opened the cupholder since ;).
