Disintegrating hoses on PCV system

I have been troubled by an exhaust/oil smell in my car while idleing, which goes away at speed. I searched this board and found references to split hoses on the PCV system which can cause this. References seemed to indicate it being a problem with the large hose.
I checked out my car tonight and was shocked to discover the small hose (1/4 inch dia) attached to the PCV nipple to have rotted away! The hose between the check valve and throttle body had so many holes and splits that it resembled swiss cheese. The outer foamed rubber hose which provides physical protection was fine. While fumbling with the smaller hose it actually fell apart in my hand, and the nylon barb on the PCV side of the check valve snapped off!
Both the hose and nylon barb appeared to have sucummed to aggressive chemical attack. Anyone else experience this?
Thanks.
