As others have indicated Saab's Trionic system uses sparkplugs in a more complex manner then most ECU systems. As I understand it they are used as "sensors" to detect engine knock by some means of measuring ionization voltage. I do not know any details about this, perhaps others do. In any respect, my experience is that the system is very sensitive to the sparkplug condition. My 1999 9-3 had the T5 Trionic system and I had to change plugs about every 12,000 km to keep the boost up. Whenever I changed the plugs the performance increase was obvious.
My 2002 9-5 linear has the T7 system and it is clearly not as sensitve as tht T5 system but I did change my plugs at 12,000 km's and I detected an improvement in drivability with smoother and slightly stronger acceleration. My car is nearing the 24,000 km mark and I will replace them again soon. I use BCPR6ES11 gapped to 0.039".
