This sound was prominent on my 9-3, but I haven't really heard it on my 9-5. I originally described it as the whoop, whoop of helicopter blades (although very quiet ones). Air distribution is handled by a a cylinder (or cannister)-like device with two drums. The drums rotated relative to one another in order to change distribution using a wratchet motion. I had this part lubed a few times on the 9-3 when I thought it was overtly loud.

See if you can make a correlation between the noise and a change in air distribution. Should you have it replaced/looked at? If under warranty, I would. If not, I would use it until it broke (assuming that is the problem).

Again, I can't say that mine is loud enough to hear it on my 9-5.
