The automatic transmission on the 2003 Aero does, indeed have a manual mode with gear change tabs on the steering wheel. As a confirmed gear-head (I drive a 2001 Aero with a 5-speed), I was truly impressed with the AT on my husband's car (the 2003 Aero). In the 2003, they finally matched the AT gearing/response to the Aero engine, essentially eliminating the noticable AT lag which was the bane of all SAAB ATs for years, even when running in default (non-manual) mode. In manual mode, the AT shifts when you tell it to, not some indeterminate time later. I'm not about to give up my 5-speed, but I actually *enjoy* driving my husband's 2003 AT Aero!!
