>1. If on real cold morning the car warms up noticably faster with the heater. What temperature is the radiator water warmed to?
About a fifth to a quarter of the way up the gauge.
>2. What do you do with the electric cord?
Plug it in (couldn't resist!)
>If you look at the photo of the unit there is a long cord attached to it. Do you just roll it up and throw it in under the hood and hope it doesn't get caught in the fan?
No, no. Do what I did. Tuck the cord along the top edge of the fender line (with the hood open, of course) from the vicinity of the block, past the inside edge of the hood strut base, and up to the rubber gasket that runs across the firewall. Then feed the AC plug end of the cord under the gasket, being careful not to pinch the cord anywhere on the metal underneath. There is a small channel you can follow and the cord fits it nicely, but I installed a bit of foam tape just to be sure it wasn't abraded. From there, let the cord follow the natural groove in the plastic cowl near the wiper arm and toward the windshield. Of course, leave the slack bundled and back in the engine compartment. Let just a couple of inches of cord and the socket protrude from atop the cowl and onto the windshield proper, where your NYS registration sticker is. It will fall by gravity below the hood flange when not in use and is invisible when the hood is closed. Just don't pinch it whenever you shut the hood.
Finally, if you were parking in a garage I'd say to bungee an outdoor grade extension cord from the rafters or a hook on your garage ceiling, and it would be impossible to forget to unplug it when you open the driver's door, since it's right there in front of you. But if you're parked outdoors, just make sure you place the cable in a similar fashion so it's never overlooked.
>I live on Long Island and we are not known for our sub zero winters. If we hit 10 F it's low.
I live in Buffalo. Any more questions?
>The reason I wanted to put it in is that my wife uses the Saab for work. Her "commute" is only 2 miles, so she spends more time running the engine to melt the frost off the windows than she does driving to work. Would this block heater reduce that time?
It won't heat the interior, just the block. It should help a little but don't expect miracles. The block heater is relatively inexpensive compared to other accessories, so I'd say go for it.
