Cell Phone interferes with Radio reception

Just a heads up in case anyone else comes across this situation.

After exhaustive troubleshooting and testing, I can confirm that with a cell phone utilizing a glass mount antenna--even in the location preferred by Saab in their service bulletin on the subject (near the brake light), reception on the FM and Weather bands can be deleteriously affected.

The antenna system on the sedan (it is slightly different for the wagons as well as the SE models that have the premier radio system) utilize the rear window defrost grid and a switching system that chooses the best of two antenna paths for the FM radio, depending on reception.

With a glass mount system on top of or near the grid, when the cell phone fires up upon turning the key, it initiates a two way communication registering itself with the cell phone network. At the same time, the radio fires up, chosing the best antenna to use, and in the process, either chooses wrong, or simply gets all messed up in the process. This might be somewhat of an over simplification, but I think it is close to what is actually going on.

RF is more an art than a science, so I would not be surprised to find some who have had success where mine has not worked. It should be remembered you might not even know the difference in a city; I am in a remote hilly area where every ounce of FM reception counts.

Upon roof mounting (hard wire) the cell phone antenna, everything works great.
