I've had a chance to drive the XC90 and can assure that it is not in the same league with an Aero Wagon except for the space! IMHO it is a major dog and if you need a vehicle with that amount of space, consider the Acura MDX or Honda Pilot, they drive much better than the XC and the quality is way higher. In particular the MDX has a beautiful interior, very good seats and is around $40k. After all the hype, the XC was a great disappointment, totally underwhelming. As much as I wanted to like it, I had to give it a one way ticket - to the doghouse! BTW, the Cadillac SRX with the V8 isn't bad but it is pricy and and I could not get comfortable in the seats, but you might. The styling is, shall we say, "quirky" ;>), I thought the MDX looked better.
Unless you positively, absolutely need the extra space, (and it isn't that much extra), no SUV type can match the performance and handling of the Aero Sportwagon. Possible exception - the Cayenne Turbo - at $80K+.
