I very recently went through this decision and went with a 2003 9-5 aero, even though I had previously put a deposit down on a silver/black TL before there was one even out to look at. First let me say that I don't know why you say the TL is thousands cheaper; I paid just $195 more for my 9-5 Aero, with automatic, than I would have for the TL (I think some Acura dealers are just starting to come down a bit off MSRP). Also, the 9-5 is only 3.5" longer than the TL - not a lot of difference there. Here are some comparison points.

2003 9-5 Aero: heated rear seats; more front and rear legroom; seats much more comfortable and made of better leather; bigger trunk and split fold-down rear seat (TL rear seat does not fold down); more horsepower at lower torque (TL peaks at 238 ft-lb at something like 5300 rpm; the car uses the entire rpm range in each gear under heavy acceleration (is this a "VTEC" thing?) - you have to experience this to see what I'm talking about) and especially quick in "Sport" mode; OnStar; free oil/maintenance for 3 years; Aero driving academy; more safety features/higher rating (I think); initial bugs worked out (although I doubt that means the Saab is going to present fewer problems); better visibility (TL seemed harder to see out of for numerous reasons); better brakes; lumbar support for front passenger; chilled glovebox (does this really work??).

2004 TL: more current/nicer looking exterior (my opinion); probably more reliable/cheaper to maintain; probably better resale value; awesome stereo with DVD-audio surround, 6-disk in-dash changer, and XM satellite radio; Bluetooth cellphone compatibility; 3.5" shorter but with a longer wheelbase than 9-5; controls are more "automated" (e.g, auto close sunroof, auto up drivers window, push button to engage seat memory rather than having to hold down the button, etc.); most people love the interior/dashboard (although I didn't); better cupholders and storage space in front; quieter engine at idle (no teeth-chattering vibration); probably a bit better handling; HID headlights, steptronic on shifter rather than flipper paddles (maybe I'll get used to this quirk).

That's all I can think of now, and I can't guarantee that I've got all this right.
