New brake pad performance

I just had my front brake pads replaced on my '01 wagon at a local Saab dealership and noticed on the drive home that I had to put lots more effort into stopping than before .
Is there a break in period for new pads? Or is there something else going on like air in the brake lines?
To stop the car now reminds me of my '87 9000-keep pressing the pedal,it will eventually stop!
And for an extra bonus,I know discovered a ding in my hood that wasn't there before. So much for going almost 3 years with out a ding.
Thanks for any help that can be given,
Tom
