Your statement was that Saabs are very expensive to maintain compared to Japanese vehicles but inline with other Euro brands. I have never owned another Euro car, so I have no idea about that. I have however, owned two Japanese cars, albeit not the same class as the 9-5 -- but that's not what your statement referred to. My point was that the two Japanese vehicles I owned cost much more to maintain and keep on the road than the 9-5.
Even though the Galant isn't direct competition, it still should have been cheaper to maintain and keep on the road, no? It's Japanese afterall.
But playing your theory, I'd say that an Acura is pretty darn close to a Saab as far as direct competition is concerned, even though I owned a 1994, which I'm sure maintenance hasn't miraculously gotten cheaper as the years go on. My 1994 went on to become the TL, which is what (as you are well aware) many people cross shop the 9-5 with.
Sorry, I guess that's just my experience.
