Hello all... I am a new owner of a 2001 9-5 Aero.

On other (read: simpler) cars, I do much of my own work - The "shade tree mechanic" stuff - Oil changes, electrical, water pumps, etc.

I have read about modern fuel injection systems, and am pretty familiar with reading codes, etc. on older GM stuff.

In addition, I am and electrical engineer, and I work with space craft avionics -- so data busses, etc. are pretty familiar to me.

So... For possible repairs, and just to tinker, I really would like to get a Tech 2 tool.

I would really like to be able to customize some of the settings without having to ask the dealer every time - Like I said I just want to tinker, and I (think I) am smart enough not to mess with stuff I shouldn't.

Questions:

- Is Tech 2 a super set of ODB II? - In other words, what, if anything will and ODB II tool do for me? Will it do anything other than just read the basic codes?

- How about something like the OTC Genisys? It says 2001 GM - Will that work? Are there Saab settings files for this tool? How about a Tech 1 tool?

- If I buy a Tech 2 tool, will I need to obtain/download special settings for my 9-5? In other words if it just says "For GM Cars", will it work for my Saab?

- If I buy a Tech 2 tool, and I do need to D/L special settings, are these standard files? I strictly run Linux, and while I can run Windoze programs , sometimes not everything works. If I just need to D/L a file, and copy it to a PCMCIA card, that is not a problem.

Thanks very much for any info.
