I always warm up my car at AM start up. Its easy for me since my home has an attached garage but I understand the difficultly living in a city where one has to park on the street.

The reason I warm up the car is to help protect the *transmission*, not the engine. Frankly, I'm not too worried about the engine. I used synthetic oil in my Saab so as long as I had full oil pressure, I wasn't too worried about engine protection.

But transmissions are different. They do not like to operate when they're too cold or too hot. They work best when the fluid is up to normal operating temp. By warming up the car in the AM you get the tranny fluid pumping and building temp before driving off.

I always find it interesting that so many car enthusiasts will baby their engines with the finest oil and filters and parts but completely neglect their transmissions. Even here on TSN there are constant discussions/debates on what the best engine oil is to use. But you rarely see a thread about transmission fluid. I've always found it a bit odd that an owner would brag about going 200,000 - 300,000 or more miles on the original engine but go thru several transmissions over the same time period. Its like people care little for their transmissions at the same time obsessing and babying their engines. Weird...
