Freaking piece of $&*^% timing belt design. V6 owners! Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Make sure that the whole tensioner kit is replaced with the free timing belt at 60,000 miles service.
Even if you have to pay for the tensioner yourself.
Had a new customer in for an oil change last Friday and notified him about a slight whirring noise from the serpentine/timing belt area.
No major noise but a subtle whirr.
I asked the customer to check up on the service status with last Saab shop and the dealer to make sure that the timing belt had been replaced.
If no service records were found he was adviced to come back so that I could remove serpentine belt and isolate the noise and maybe replace timing belt and tensioner.
Well, he came back, ON A TOW TRUCK. On Saturday the tensioner pulley gave way and ruined the top of engine.
How I wish now I had forbidden him to drive away with the car on Friday, but the whirring noise was so light that I had no reason to expect this so soon.
Obviously, GM have not addressed the tensioner/idler pulley problems that surfaced in 94-95 with the NG900 V6 engines.
So when you have your 60K or 120K service done on the V6 engine, make sure the whole tensioner kit is installed with the timing belt.
This car by the way had 88K miles and I don't know the service status of it. Timing belt is in perfect condition so it might have been replaced at 60K.
