I had one bad moment w/my '99 w/16" wheels. I managed to bend 2 wheels and damage one tire sidewall (I was a passenger... thinking SWERVE!) in a really big pothole / crater in NYC. That event was one more reason that I've held back from going to the 17" wheels which I love the look of.
After checking, I'm convinced that the saab dealer who did my oil change the day before dropped the tire pressure; in any case it was lower in all 4 tires than I normally run. Bad combination of events.
Still, the final cost to fix that event ended up being less than $300, and I don't expect to ever repeat it! Another bonus: you'll get better gas and tire mileage w/attention to the tire pressure!
