This is easy to diagnose.
When the engine is cool, let the car warm up and feel the top radiator hose as the car warms up. If the hose gets warm along with the engine, then the thermostat is bad. If the hose stays cool until the engine warms up to its normal temperature and then all of a sudden starts to get warm, then the thermostat is performing properly.
Be sure to get the real OEM thermostat. They have a hole in them to allow proper bleeding of air from the cooling system. Some third party thermostats (like from PepBoyz or other stores) that would fit don't have this hole, and the system won't expel air properly.
