From what I see they are recommending 8k mile changes and that filter changes are the key if you want to run longer change intervals (10k+). I know that BMW has invested a lot of resources in trying to improve their filter technologies. Saab claims a long life filter and I would be intrigued to know what this actually means.
Not knowing the history of this engine (an old design big bore pushrod V-8)it also makes the data a bit hard to interpret. At one point they state that the copper levels had stopped rising because something had finally worked its way out of the engine. I wonder why this was in the engine in the first place.
I think the study is interesting and it is nice to have some actual data. But to conclude that you need to change at 5k intervals from it is not correct.
