wagon tailgate opening issue

Been noticing now with the cold weather that my tailgate, when opened, doesn't extend to its top-most position itself without an extra slight shove. Whereas it used to extend to that position itself, it now stops at eye level (I'm 6'1). Found myself nearly bumping into it several times this weekend, thereby determining that something was not the same in its operation. This is the first winter season it has not been in a heated garage consistently, so I wonder if others have experienced this in colder temps. I believe the struts for the tailgate are internal, but can't recall for sure.
Any thoughts are appreciated.
