Like most things, the answer is...it depends.
I once had a mechanic tell me it looked like I had an oil leak. In actuality, it was spillage from a recent oil change I'd performed (if you try to pour oil down the dipstick/oil fill hole too fast, it burps). That may be the case here. Also, if the tranny drain plug isn't tight enough, some seepage may result. It's an aluminum plug screwed in an aluminum case, so if the last person to change tranny fluid was duly careful not to overtighten, he might not have tightened it enough -resulting in some drippage.
Even if they are bona fide leaks, they may be little more than seepage, and take a long time for enough oil to leak out to be low enough to cause any damage. Often that interval is longer than the maintenance schedule. If that's the case here, I'd be more curious to know if the mechanic you had look it over reported low fluid levels. If not, then I'd focus more on whether periodic maintenance had been faithfully performed.
While everyone has heard a horror story about such things, Saab motors and the Warner-Hoisen trannies are pretty tough.
