Extra rear view mirror -- suggestions?

An impulse buy -- Xmas present for my wife's car. A sort-of wide angle rear view mirror, designed to allow her, without turning around, to see our two-year old while he's in the back seat.
It is about six inches wide and two inches high. It has a fairly strong suction cup that is designed to adhere to the inside of the front windshield. It was inexpensive. Now I'm having trouble figuring out where to put the thing.
As you all know, the 9-5 windshield offers a fairly expansive view of the world, without much hood getting in the way. I am trying to figure out the best place to mount this extra mirror without obstructing the driver's view of what's going on _outside_ of the car. Ideally, I thought this doodad might increase safety, by allowing a view of the back seat without making the driver turn around. I pictured it mounted low, where it would only be in the way of the hood.
Obviously want to stay away from the ACC monitor in dead center.
Anyone have one of these? Anyone with advice? (including "don't use it")
Thanks in advance
and Merry Christmas!
