New 9-5 fuel requirement

I''m thinking of buying a 2004 9-5 Arc sedan to replace my '92 900T/135k miles.
Here's my question: Saab recommends 92-93 octane gasoline for that car (2.3L I-4T) and the higher performance Aero. AFAIK, 92-93 octane gasoline hasn't been available here in California for a couple of years. 91 octane is the highest available. 87-93 octane was recommended for the discontinued Linear.
What is/are the long term consequences of running that engine on less than recommended octane gas? In the short term I imagine that the engine management system just de-tunes itself.
