Look at a bottle of antifreeze and look at the temps for a 50:50 mix. That is what you get from the factory and what you should maintain.
My jug of Saab USA BLUE antifreeze states that 50:50 is good for -34F
The lowest freezing temps that they show are around -69F for a mixture that is 5/8ths antifreeze. 60% antifreeze will be good for -62F. Now you do not need protection that low.
Note that coolant that has high concentrations of antifreeze will have lower abilily to transfer heat. The specific heat of the antifreeze is much lower than that of water. This will make your engine warm up faster in the winter, but may make your engine overheat in the summer as the cooling system heat transfer is reduced. Also, high levels of antifreeze will get very thick when very cold and may not flow properly thru the rad even though the mixture is not frozen.
freeze points: Saab USA Blue antifreeze
antifreeze:cooling system capacity
3:8 - 7F
4:8 -34F
7:13 -45F
9:16 -52F
7:12 -57F
6:10 -62F
5:8 -69F
The owners manual states that the 'red' coolant from the factory is good for -52F(-50C) at 60%. So the red coolant seems to be indicated to have a weaker freeze protection. This also implies that a 60% mixture is to use so the cooling system might be ok with that in the summer.
For the 9-5, the 4 cylinder cooling capacity is 7.6 quarts. The V6 is 7.4.
So lets call it 7.5. If you add a gallon of BLUE coolant to a flushed system then top up with (distilled) water. Then the mix will be 4:7.5. That should be good for -45F with convetional glycol antifreeze.
