Can't lock doors, engine running, in Park

I live in the northeast USA - winters can be very cold. I would like to be able to warm up my 2000 9-5's interior while it sits in the parking lot - but I don't want to leave the car running, with the key in it, unattended, while I wait inside. My local Saab tech discouraged me from having a remote starter installed because of the security problem - something about needing a key physically near the ignition switch in order to start the car. (I think he was referring to an RFID chip in the key.)
I would like to be able to start the car, walk away, lock the doors with the remote, and return in 10-15 minutes.
But the 9-5 tries *very hard* to prevent you from locking your keys in the car. I have tried several methods, and none work. I tried locking the doors with the remote (didn't work, while sitting in the car or while outside), locking the door by hand (nope - you can't push the knob down if it's in P or N and the door is open) ...
The only thing else I can think of is locking the door, starting the car, and then climbing out the window. :-)
Is there a method (Tech II or otherwise) to accomplish this? I couldn't find anything relevant in the archive.
Thanks!
