Have owned a 1996 850 sportwagon and a 1998 V70 (old model) before going to 2003 SAAB LINEAR wagon . I have also driven for a half day a 2002 v70. All Volvos were normally aspirated.
My conclusion is that Volvos are getting cushier (read "mushier") with each generation.

Reliability was good for both Volvos (though both developed drivetrain vibrations that couldn't be solved...).

However, driving the SAAB is a lot more fun and fuel efficiency keeps me impressed.

There is something about the SAAB that makes it look smaller than it really is. Especially with regards to space in the wagon area. After the XMAS holidays, I can now attest (like many others on this thread) that the space behing there is truly impressive. And the rigid but removable shelf that I found stupid at first I now truly love. Put the net up, pack the lighter items on the shelf and you've gained a lot of space. Also, the rigid shelf can be closed and not look like it is hiding stuff. I have two friends that have had their V70s broken into to get at stuff that was hidden by the "shade-like" screen (the shade looks like a burglar invitation).

My only concern regarding the SAAB is long term cost of ownership i.e. parts are expensive... Seats are also not great in the Linear (Volvos are much, much better) and the sound system in the SAAB also is not great. I am baffled by this as I have the upgraded 200W system whereas the Volvo's had an 80W Kenwood (I believe) and sounded much better.

Also, stay away from the rain sensing wipers and backup detection. They are ridiculous and feel like they belong in a Cadillax. Not ready for prime time.

So far though I really like the car and if you are looking for a highway cruiser, the SAAB will deliver.

Good luck!
