Have had 3 DI failures on the 9000-900 and the 9-5 (2002) To my opinion the DI is a poor construction. Several of the components that became visible when the DI was removed and taken apart, were simple standard temperature capacitors and other components used in everyday electronics such as TV-sets etc. The heat that builds up under the DI most certainly requires components designed for higher temperatures and of better quality than those used in the DI that I took apart(red). I have been selling electronic components since -83 so I have some knowledge.
I brought my findings to the attention of SAAB factory rep´s in Sweden but with little or no response.
If the engine dies suddenly (and they did for me) you will most certainly risk having problems braking and steering. Under special conditions a non working engine may be a serious problem.
SAAB designs and builds wonderful cars but,in my opinion and with experience from approx 500K miles in SAAB;s, the components they buy from others e.g. AC-pump, Fuel pump, SID, DI etc etc seem not to match the quality of the car itself. Repeated failures as with the DI tend to become a quality issue affecting the car as a whole.
Wish they would make a true effort get through these obstacles once and for all and offer free replacements for the most common failures until they do. Would probably sell more cars too !
