Is this DI or Alternator problem

My 99 Saab 9-5 (90K) sputtered today while being accelerated at about 10mph while my girlfriend was driving it and she turned the engine off. Now it won't start. The car's engine turns a couple times when I try to start it but it won't start. There appeared to be some faint smoke coming from the right side of the engine.
Last week we left the lights on and had to jump start the battery. But the problem doesn't appear to be with the battery. The display lights come on and the 'check engine' light is on. Does this sound like a DI problem?
