tire mounting is not mindless

it actually requires a bit of expertise, concentration and attention to detail to do a good job and avoid rim damage. based on the number of posts about rim gouges, scratches or unbalanced results i would conclude that many places are indeed doing it in a mindless way.
way back in the early 80's when i was in college i worked mounting tires on saturdays in a tire shop, the vast majority of cars back then had steel rims and i saw a fair amount of scuffs and scrapes(that thankfully could be hidden by the hubcap) inflicted by inattention(myself included). i don't know how much better the new tire mounting machines are but i imagine that you still need to be careful while mounting tires on alloy rims
