Not sure about earlier years but I understand the '04 wagon has side curtain airbags.
As for space, there's no comparison. The Saab is made for driving, not hauling. The 9-5 wagon is a great compromise for small families but not one of the more capacious wagons and certainly not in the same league as a minivan.
Our decision came down to not wanting to live with all the drawbacks of a larger vehicle just for the 3-4 times a year we'll be hauling something too big for the Saab.
