2002 Aero problems

We have owned our 9-5 Aero wagon (w/5 speed auto) since Apr 2002 and have 15000 miles so far. No serious problems to report, but a couple of nuisance items concern me. For about a year now, the passenger side HVAC temp setting display has occasionally lost some of the LCD segments, sometimes enough that you cannot tell what the number is. I have read about SID LCD problems, but not the HVAC display. The problem is intermittent and, on long trips, is almost guaranteed to happen. I would like to have it fixed/replaced, but I'm not crazy about somebody tearing into the dash to do it.
The other annoying, and perhaps more serious, problem is the harsh engagement of the XMSN into drive after backing out of the driveway. This happens even if the car has run for a few minutes. and only occurs in very cold weather, but I am concerned about the damage it could cause over time.
Has anyone else experienced these problems on their 9-5?
