I have never found the trip computer to be accurate...

My 2000lpt sedan averages 30mpg on my 100 mile daily commute, and 35mpg on long distance expressway trips if not in mid-summer (A/C). The trip computer has never shown numbers that large, but I religiously reset the trip odometer with each tankful to check the fuel usage. I consistently drive 390 miles between refuelings and typically need +/-13 gallons to fill-up.
Tires do make a difference (the dreaded OE Michelins are a fuel efficient tire), use of A/C (it is a small displacement engine) makes a difference, and how hard you press the engine naturally impacts the mileage too.
