I have a 3 month old black Aero Wagon, and I was really paranoid about scratching the paint. I live on a gravel road, so there is sometimes lots of grit on the side of the car, especially if the road is wet. This method has worked great:
I use a boar's hair bristle brush on a handle - the water flows right out the bristles as you wash, flushing the grit away from the paint's surface. I give the car a quick once-over with this brush to pre-clean it - it only takes about 2 or 3 minutes. Then I use a sheepskin mitt with a carnauba wax car wash solution (not detergent!!!) to get the surface really clean. I do the wheels last with a gentle wheel brush and a cotton rag. No wheel cleaner! It's absolutely not needed if the wheels are kept well waxed.
Since I started using the brush, I have noticed that the amount of dirt left in the bottom of the wash bucket has been dramatically reduced, so the wash mitt stays a lot cleaner. You will get swirl marks no matter what, but this way they are minor and easily polished out later when your paint has cured. Be sure to wax the car with a pure carauba wax after a month or two. Saab says to wait 6 months or something - no way!!!!
Give Griot's Speed Shine a try - that stuff is terrific for bringing out the gloss, even after a thorough wash. And make sure you use only quality all-cotton cloths for wiping or polishing, especially with a darker color. Griot's detailing handbook has a lot of good info about car care and their catalog is worth a long read.
