We had a problem with the Saab garage door openers in that you literally had to be right on top of the garage door in order for it to open, and sometimes you had to move up and down the driveway while holding the opener button down. Definitely a pain in the butt. Apparently the garage door was shielding the signal in some such way. In any case, with the new 9-3, it was even worse -- the door wouldn't open about 1/2 of the time.
So we installed a LiftMaster 412HM receiver that allows for an external antenna connection (86LM). The antenna is mounted outside of the house -- it's a short 8-10" "whip" antenna. The receiver can be used with any garage door opener, as basically it's wired to the GDO as if it were another opener device like the kind you have mounted in your garage (i.e., to open the garage door when you're walking from the house into the garage). Along with the needed power supply (85LM), the total with shipping was under $100 from http://shop.store.yahoo.com/liftmaster-garage-opener/ and it was well worth it. Now we can open the garage door from about four or five houses down.
