Per Michael Mauer, Concept Cars are intended to show the direction of the brand's design. They do this to gauge public opinion and to "warm up" the public to what's coming. Look to the 9-X, 9-3X and 9-3 Sport Hatch to see the evolution of the front end of Saabs (in reverse order!) Back end? Well, it's hard to be particularly innovative with a sedan w/o gettinig all goofy looking, so once again it will be up to the "wagon" versin to show some distinction.
As for the concept drawing being shopped around by Hidden Image (and shown in NINES), there are some obvious errors (Chrysler grille opening rather than Saab opening, '02 derivative lower front valence versus the more up to date offerings ***already in production***.
It doesn't take a crystal ball to predict the car will be on a widened, lengthened Epsilon platform (hold your nose and sit down in a Maluboo Maxx to guage the room, and expect a little more rear overhang ... I'm just guessing here, but its obvious). Engine wise, expect the Global 6 to be the HOT engnine, 2.8-3.2 L with Turbo and Direct Gasoline Injection, with possibly a N/A V-8 version down the line, possibly not. (a prototype V-8 9-5 mule has been photographed). The 2.0t and 2.0T from the 9-3, and the 2.2 and 3.0 TiD diesels will all be for sale in Europe, I'd predict. I can imagine the 2.0T being the base engine in the USA, unless they can build enough sturds into the 2.4 version to turbocharge it. (The 2.4, with variable cam phasing, neatly matches the original 16V 2.0 turbo with 170 hp and 170 ft. lb. of torque.)
