I do this around once a year. With almost 40K and 1.5 years my first on this 9-5. Brake fluid is cheap and the procedure is fast and easy.
Clean the top of the reservoir and the cap to remove dirt.
Removed the cap, and float chamber. Allow it to drip into the reservoir until you see the float chamber (attached to the cap) is empty. Now wipe with a clean cloth and put into a sandwich poly bag bag to keep it clean.
Use a 60mL syringe and a vinyl tube to extract fluid from the reservoir and put into a vessel prelocated close to the reservoir. I used a small polyethelene 'dip tube' from a old spray bottle of some sort, inserted into the 1/8" iDI vinyl tube to get down in there better and right into the master cylidner below. There is a secondary chamber that you cannot empty with this design. I was able to extract 200mL in total.
After you refil, without starting the engine or using the clutch, pump the brakes repeatedly, and releasing with many very short strokes. This gets the fluid into the MC.
Fill with new DOT brake fluid.
The reservoir is vented, a dumb design. This fluid picks up moisture from the air. This is the only place where moisture can get into the system. So you can remove the moisture at the source and renew with dry fluid. This should be done prior to a complete brake system bleed to avoid pumping the contaminated fluid though the rest of the system.
I found some black residue on the float tube and elsewhere. I wiped this off. There may be some on the 'roof' of the reservoir that you can clean some off.
When you refill, if you fill to maximun, when you do brake work, pushing caliper pistons in for new pads or whatever, there is a good chance that the reservoir will overflow.
