are you talking about the base/entry 9-5 ?? and if so what options (i.e. manual vs. auto, premium pkg. heated seats, etc...) ???

the reliability issue is always an interesting one.. Everybody seems to have their own interpretation of what reliable means... Having said that, it seems that the early 99'models had a few problems .. but the more recent versions seem to be fairing well.... Most of the publications out there seem to be giving the car good press in this area as well....
I wouldn't get too caught up in comparing it to your Dad's old 900... as this is a totally different design...
The repairs will be expensive .. as they are for any European model, but the warranty covers you for the first 50k miles.. so by that time you will probably know if the car is holding up, otherwise you can always opt to sell it before those out of pocket repairs start hurting you...
