If you think about it, the amount of peak torque that each journal bearing
has to withstand in an Aero is 65 lb-ft (258/4) whereas each journal
bearing in a 530 has to withstand peak torque of 36 lb-ft (214/6).
So, the journal bearing in an Aero has to withstand 80% more peak torque
than the journal bearing in a 530.
So, a good quality fully synthetic oil with good HT/HS rating is a must,
and if you don't live in Alaska, Mobil 1 5W-40 (repackaged Delvac 1)
is a beeter choice than Mobil 1 0W-40 due to smaller amount of VII,
stronger additive package and higher HT/HS. And I concur with my friend
Jason. By no means should you drive more than 10,000 miles without an
oil change in an Aero. 15,000 miles in 9-3SS is pushing it and since 9-3SS has
6 qt sump, the equivalent mileage per unit volume of oil is 10,000 miles
for 9-5 given 4 qt sump.
Just like old times, eh Jase? Where's Curly?
Cheers,
Jae
