Bob: We had similar symptoms with my wife's old Audi A-6, only our "shut-downs" were more random.....sometimes every 6-weeks sometimes up to 6-month intervals (very un-nerving when cruising along the interstate with a Mack-truck bulldog staring at you in the rear-view mirror!!). The dealer shrugged it off (the car being out of warranty), as the hic-cup would set no trouble code in the computer, and the car would always start up after a 45-second cool-down as if nothing ever happened and not repeat itself for at least another month or two. (Since they couldn't duplicate the symptoms in the shop, their profound advice was to suffer through the anomaly until it got so bad the car wouldn't re-start....at which time they might be able to diagnose the problem!). After replacing a series of relays & wiring contacts in the fuel & ignition circuits, to no avail, I finally replaced the fuel pump itself......before dumping the car (my wife was afraid to drive it anymore!). I'm assuming the fuel-pump was the culprit, as the new owner (who was amply forewarned of the potential problem!) is still driving the car after a couple of years without apparent repeat. I suspect I may have had a marginal fuel-pump, which would periodically overheat to the point where the relay would trip the circuit. I sympathize with your plight, and wish you luck!
