Late '03s (don't ask me to define "late", I don't know) and beyond have a new version of the driver software that is supposed to urge more life from the unit. The later version of the software also has some additional diagnostics codes, and techs are instructed to load the new software and run the diagnostics before replacing a dead DI. The results of the diagnostics are being collected to help determine the reason for the unacceptable tendency of DI Cassettes to crash and burn without prior notice. With DI circuitry now part of GM's global mass production engines, either in unified cassettes (3.5L "Shortstar" V6, 2.0T, 2.2, and 2.4L "Global 4") and individual coil-on-plug units (DOHC I4, I5, and I6 truck motors, 3.6L "Global 6") it's hard to believe that the life issue hasn't been solved. I can't imagine why Saab hasn't settled the issue with the older units.
