Although I'd certainly recommend AMSOIL ATF over Mobil 1<g>. The synthetic will mix with the non-synthetic without problem--at least it has for the past 18+ years since AMSOIL introduced synthetic ATF to the market.
When you drain what you can from the pan, you'll get about 1/3 of the fluid. I normally drain what I can, replace with equal amount, drive enough to mix, and repeat the operation a couple more times. By then, most of the fluid is synthetic. From that point, I'm comfortable checking the level and not replacing any more fluid for the next 45-50,000 miles.
While you are at it, change the power steering fluid the same way (by siphoning or pumping out what you can.
