Agreed, CarFax can only tell you what it knows. The coverage of their database is spotty, because it depends on the states to provide dumps, and states don't provide the same info. At the least they get title status and history (registrations and sometime emissions), but the rest of the info is 'gravy'. It's still useful, just some people may be lulled into believing it's more useful than it really is...

Be aware, CarFax's definition of 'Major Accident' is one that totaled the car (altered the title to wreck or salvage). That's being glib...$17K of damage to a $30K car is also a major accident but you won't see it on a report unless it was in one of the very few states that note police reports in the VIN log. There's plenty that will slip past CarFax (and the other one, experian's service, i forget the name...
