This was similar to my experience...I ended up giving up on getting the cartridges out intact, cut out the bushings, and used a bolt cutter to snip the shafts. VERY satisfying after an hour of [getting nowhere] 'doing it the right way'.
Big caveat - this may only be an option with the OE shocks, which come with fresh rubber, washers, nuts, everything.
I think I agree with the growing sentiment that this may be something to pay the garage for. My torque wrench is a bit of a monster so the lower bolts weren't as horrible, but it still wasn't pleasant.
